In basketball, the “elbow” refers to a specific area on the court. It is the region at the top of the key, near the free-throw line, where the lane (or paint) meets the perimeter. More specifically, the “elbow” is located on either side of the key, where the foul line forms a right angle with the free-throw line extended. There are two elbows: the “right elbow” and the “left elbow,” based on the player’s perspective.
The elbow is an important spot on the court because it’s often a key area for scoring opportunities, whether through jump shots, mid-range shots, or passes. The elbow is also a common place for post-up plays or pick-and-roll actions, as it provides a strategic position for players to operate.
