what is double bonus in basketball

In basketball, the term “double bonus” refers to a situation where a team has committed a certain number of fouls in a half, usually seven or more, leading to the opposing team being awarded two free throws for every subsequent foul, regardless of whether the foul was a shooting foul.
Typically, the “bonus” situation occurs after a team accumulates 7 team fouls in a half. If the team reaches 10 fouls in a half, the “double bonus” is triggered, meaning that all fouls result in two free throws for the fouled player. This rule is designed to discourage excessive fouling and promote fair play.
In the first bonus situation (after 7 fouls), a team is awarded one free throw for each non-shooting foul. If the player makes the first free throw, they get one additional attempt. In the double bonus, the player gets two free throws regardless of the outcome of the first attempt.
