To set up your DIRECTV remote, follow these steps based on your remote type. DIRECTV has two main types of remotes: the standard remote and the Genie remote.
For Standard DIRECTV Remote (RC65, RC66, RC71):
1. Turn on your TV and DIRECTV receiver.
2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT buttons on the remote at the same time for about 3 seconds until the red indicator light on the remote turns on and stays on.
3. Release the MUTE and SELECT buttons. The red indicator light will blink and then stay on.
4. Press and release the TV Power button (the red indicator blinks and turns off).
5. Press and hold the SELECT button until the red indicator blinks and then stays on.
6. Enter the 5-digit code for your TV brand. You can find the code list for your TV brand in the DIRECTV manual or on their website. After entering the code, the red indicator light will blink and turn off.
7. Test the remote by turning the TV off and on, and adjusting the volume. If the remote works correctly, the setup is complete. If not, repeat the process using a different code.
For DIRECTV Genie Remote (RC73):
1. Turn on your TV and DIRECTV receiver.
2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT buttons until the green light at the top of the remote turns on and stays on.
3. Release the MUTE and SELECT buttons. The green light will blink and then stay on.
4. Press and release the TV Power button. The green light will blink and turn off.
5. Press and release the MUTE button, then press and release the SELECT button. The green light will blink and turn off.
6. Enter the 5-digit code for your TV. (Codes can be found in the DIRECTV manual or online.)
7. Test your remote to make sure it controls your TV’s power and volume.
For a Genie DVR or Receiver:
If you’re trying to set up a Genie DVR or receiver to control your TV, you can follow these additional steps:
1. Press the MENU button on the remote.
2. Go to Settings & Help > Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to program your remote.
If you have trouble finding the correct code, you can use the Auto Code Search option, where the remote will automatically cycle through all available codes until it finds one that works with your TV.
